Tea tree oil is one of the favorite ingredients we use at Green Leaf Medi Spa. Because of its antiseptic and antimicrobial properties, we use tea tree oil in our signature after wax soothing mix which effectively fights redness and swelling. Tea tree oil has many other benefits, as the Australasia Aborigines have known throughout centuries. The tea tree originally grew only in the western coasts of Australia but now it is a global product with plantations as far as California, USA.
Medical Benefits
During World War II, tea tree oil was added into machine “cutting” oils in Australian factories. This greatly reduced the number of infections caused by abrasions on the hands of workers from metal filings and slivers. Today, tea tree oil is widely used medicinally in the prevention of wound infections, fungal infections, acne, yeast infections and other skin conditions. It is also used as an alternative treatment for colds, sore throat, cold sores, gingivitis, hemorrhoids and ear infections.
As a topical application, tea tree oil could even treat dandruff, head lice, dermatitis/ eczema, water warts, chicken pox, among others.
Beauty Benefits
Many beauty products in the market have added tea tree oil into their ingredients, especially when it is known as ‘medicine in a bottle’. The number one use of tea tree oil as a dermatological product is acne treatment and prevention. Tea tree oil facial washes and gels is all organic and does not contain harmful chemicals such as alcohol which strip the skin of its natural oils, thus it is the best alternative for people with sensitive skin.
Other tea tree oil beauty benefits include:
- Dry skin treatment
- Razor burn reliever
- Hair growth inducer
- Make-up remover
- Cuticle softener
- Facial mask
As in any treatment and skin regimen, whether traditional, commercial or organic, always make sure that you do a patch test before using tea tree oil to make sure you do not have any allergies against it.
