Your 5 Burning Questions on Sunscreen, Answered

The weather is starting to warm up and you know summer is upon us! But before soaking up the golden rays, make sure you are well protected. Are you sure your regular sunscreen is enough? Here we answer your burning questions on skin protection under the sun.

1. I use a moisturizer with SPF 15, is that enough protection?

First of all, sunscreen is only effective if it offers enough protection against UVB and UVA rays which are the primary causes of skin aging and cancer. Using broad-spectrum SPF 30 will do the job, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Second, make sure you apply 0.002 mm layer to get optimal results. And reapply often!

2. If I put on sunscreen this morning, would that protect me for the rest of the day?

Follow the 20-2 rule in using sunscreen: 20 minutes before sun exposure and 2 hours later to re-apply. But if you’ve sweat or went swimming, you should re-apply within 1 hour of your initial application.

3. Do sunscreens cause breakouts?

Don’t skip the sunscreen just because it might cause acne! Instead, find a product that would suit your skin type and is formulated to be non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores). If you have oily skin, you may mineral powder on top of your sunscreen to control shine and an extra layer of protection as mineral-based cosmetics are often formulated with SPF 20.

4. What’s the average shelf life of sunscreen?

Sunscreens usually come with an expiration date on its packaging. If not, keep in mind that sunscreens are formulated to maintain its efficacy for up to three years from its manufacturing date. Please discard sunscreen that is way past its expiration date as the components have degraded and may even cause harm to your skin.

5. It’s cloudy today so I won’t need sunscreen, right? How about when I’m indoors all day?

Again, you need to be protected against UVA and UVB rays and these still penetrate clouds. Here’s how to tell if your skin is still being exposed: if you can see sunlight from indoors, chances are the you are still exposed to its rays.
